Phillips Exeter Academy
Phillips Exeter Academy was founded in 1781 by John Phillips, whose brother Samuel had founded Phillips Academy Andover just three years earlier, making the two schools sibling institutions with a friendly rivalry that has persisted for over two centuries. The school is closely identified with the "Harkness method," a discussion-based teaching approach built around oval tables that seat around a dozen students and a teacher as equals, funded by a 1930 gift from oil magnate Edward Harkness specifically to support this style of instruction rather than traditional lecture-based teaching. Exeter's notable alumni span an unusually wide range of fields, including author Dan Brown, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg (who briefly attended before transferring), and numerous U.S. senators and Pulitzer Prize winners, reflecting the school's long-standing reputation as a pipeline to elite universities and prominent careers. Phillips Exeter Academy's combination of its historic Harkness discussion-based teaching method and its centuries-long track record producing prominent alumni has made it one of the most academically respected boarding schools in the country.
VS
Deerfield Academy
Deerfield Academy was founded in 1797 in the historic Connecticut River Valley town of Deerfield, Massachusetts, and it underwent a dramatic transformation during the multi-decade tenure of headmaster Frank Boyden, who led the school from 1902 to 1968 and built it from a struggling local academy into a nationally prominent institution. Boyden's unusually long tenure, one of the longest headmasterships of any major American secondary school, let him personally shape Deerfield's academic culture, campus development, and admissions strategy across nearly seven decades, a level of sustained single-leader influence rare in American education. The school's setting within the historic Deerfield village, itself a nationally recognized historic district featuring preserved 18th- and 19th-century architecture, gives the campus an unusually direct physical connection to early American colonial history. Deerfield Academy's combination of Frank Boyden's historically singular multi-decade leadership and its setting within a nationally significant historic village has made it one of the most distinctively rooted boarding schools in the country.
