Pinocchio
Pinocchio, released in 1940 as Walt Disney Studios' second animated feature, is widely regarded by animation historians as a technical peak for hand-drawn character animation, with its detailed character movement and environmental effects animation representing some of the most sophisticated work the medium had achieved to that point. The film's darker, more morally complex content — including the genuinely disturbing "Pleasure Island" sequence in which misbehaving boys are transformed into donkeys — reflected a willingness to include frightening material in children's animation that later Disney productions sometimes softened relative to Pinocchio's original intensity. Its song "When You Wish Upon a Star" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and later became closely associated with the Walt Disney Company's own corporate identity, used in the studio's opening logo sequence for decades and effectively becoming the company's unofficial theme song. Despite its now-classic status, Pinocchio was a box-office disappointment on its initial 1940 release, partly due to World War II disrupting Disney's usual European distribution markets, and its reputation as one of the studio's greatest technical achievements developed substantially through subsequent theatrical re-releases and home video distribution in the decades that followed.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released in 1937, was the first full-length cel-animated feature film produced by an American studio, a project so financially risky at the time that skeptics within the film industry reportedly nicknamed it "Disney's Folly," predicting the extended runtime would be unsustainable for animation. The film's box-office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of its era, proved animated features could sustain a full-length narrative and directly enabled Walt Disney Studios to continue producing subsequent animated features, establishing the commercial viability of the entire feature-length animation industry that followed. Its technical innovations, including the multiplane camera system that created a genuine sense of depth and parallax movement between animated layers, pushed animation technology forward in ways that influenced the visual techniques of animated filmmaking for decades afterward. The film's blend of genuinely frightening moments — the Evil Queen's transformation sequence in particular — with warmth and humor established a tonal template that Disney's subsequent animated features continued to follow, and Snow White remains one of the most historically significant films in the development of feature animation as a legitimate commercial art form.
