Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Planes, Trains and Automobiles, released in 1987 and written and directed by John Hughes, follows two mismatched travelers — Steve Martin's uptight businessman and John Candy's well-meaning but overbearing shower curtain ring salesman — struggling through a chaotic multi-day journey home for Thanksgiving after their flight is canceled. The film's blend of broad physical comedy with genuine emotional depth, particularly in its final act revealing Candy's character's loneliness following his wife's death, gave the film an unexpected emotional resonance beneath its comedic road trip structure. Candy's performance is widely regarded as one of his finest and most emotionally complete, and the film's willingness to let its central mismatched-buddy comedy gradually reveal genuine pathos distinguished it from more purely farcical travel comedies of its era. Planes, Trains and Automobiles' combination of genuine comedic chaos and its unexpectedly moving emotional conclusion has made it one of the most beloved Thanksgiving-themed films in American cinema, and it remains widely regarded as one of the finest travel comedies ever made.

Easy Rider
Easy Rider, released in 1969 and directed by and starring Dennis Hopper, follows two bikers traveling across the American South and Southwest on a drug-funded motorcycle journey toward New Orleans, and the film became one of the defining works of the late-1960s American counterculture movement. Its low-budget, independently produced success — made for roughly $400,000 and grossing tens of millions — demonstrated that films made outside the traditional Hollywood studio system could achieve massive commercial success, directly influencing the subsequent "New Hollywood" movement of more auteur-driven, independently minded filmmaking throughout the 1970s. The film's soundtrack, built around existing rock songs by artists including Steppenwolf and Jimi Hendrix rather than an original score, established a widely imitated template for using popular contemporary music to underscore a film's narrative and thematic content. Easy Rider's bleak, unresolved ending, in which its protagonists are killed by hostile rural strangers without any clear narrative resolution, reflected the film's broader pessimistic commentary on America's cultural divisions during the late 1960s, and it remains one of the most historically significant films of the American counterculture era.
