PlayStation (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Sony entered the video game console market with the original PlayStation in Japan in December 1994, developed after Sony's earlier planned CD-ROM partnership with Nintendo collapsed, prompting Sony to build and launch a competing console entirely on its own. The PlayStation brand grew to become one of the best-selling console lines in gaming history, with the PlayStation 2, released in 2000, remaining the best-selling video game console of all time by units sold, a record it has held for over two decades. Sony's PlayStation division built a reputation for securing high-profile exclusive titles and cinematic, narrative-driven franchises like The Last of Us and God of War, distinguishing its first-party output from competitors' more gameplay-mechanics-focused flagship franchises. PlayStation's combination of its origin story rising from a collapsed Nintendo partnership and the PlayStation 2's still-unbroken record as the best-selling console ever has made it one of the most commercially significant brands in gaming history.
VS
Activision Blizzard
Activision was founded in 1979 by four former Atari programmers, making it the first-ever independent third-party video game developer, formed specifically because Atari refused to credit or compensate its programmers as individual creators of hit games. Blizzard Entertainment, founded separately in 1991, built some of the most influential franchises in PC gaming history, including Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft, with World of Warcraft becoming the most successful subscription-based massively multiplayer online game ever released after its 2004 launch. Activision and Blizzard merged in 2008 to form Activision Blizzard, later adding the mobile gaming giant King, maker of Candy Crush Saga, before Microsoft completed its roughly $69 billion acquisition of the combined company in October 2023. Activision Blizzard's combination of Activision's status as gaming's first independent developer and Blizzard's genre-defining World of Warcraft has made it one of the most historically significant company mergers in video game history.
