Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda
The Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, built primarily during the 1970 and 1971 model years, paired Chrysler's legendary 426-cubic-inch Hemi V8 — originally developed for NASCAR and drag racing before being detuned slightly for street use — with the redesigned, more aggressively styled second-generation Barracuda body, creating one of the most powerful and today most valuable muscle cars Detroit ever built. Only a small number of Hemi 'Cudas were built across those two model years, particularly in convertible form, and that scarcity — combined with the car's genuine drag-strip performance credentials — has made surviving examples some of the most expensive American muscle cars ever sold at auction, with verified sales of rare color-and-option combinations exceeding several million dollars. Its arrival came right at the peak of Detroit's late-1960s-to-early-1970s horsepower arms race, a period the industry itself effectively ended within a couple of years afterward as rising insurance premiums on high-performance cars, tightening emissions regulations, and the 1973 oil crisis combined to make big-block muscle cars commercially and practically unviable almost overnight. Built at Chrysler's Hamtramck, Michigan assembly plant, the Hemi 'Cuda's brief production window sitting almost exactly at the muscle car era's absolute peak — right before the entire category collapsed under regulatory and economic pressure — has made it one of the most historically significant and sought-after survivors of Detroit's original horsepower wars.
VS
Shelby Mustang GT500
Carroll Shelby, already famous for building the Cobra roadster and for his earlier collaboration turning the standard Mustang into the race-ready GT350, developed the original Shelby GT500 for the 1967 model year by fitting a large 428-cubic-inch V8 into the Mustang fastback body — a car built specifically to be the most powerful, most track-capable Mustang variant Ford offered, well beyond what the standard production Mustang could deliver. Ford revived the GT500 name in 2007 after decades of dormancy, and the modern versions pushed the concept dramatically further: the 2020 Shelby GT500 arrived with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing over 760 horsepower, a dual-clutch transmission borrowed from high-performance European sports cars, and a Carbon Fiber Track Package option with a rear wing generating genuine, measurable aerodynamic downforce — engineering far beyond anything the original 1967 car's development team could have imagined. Its production has moved between Shelby American's own facilities and Ford's mainstream assembly lines depending on the era, reflecting the nameplate's unusual dual identity as both an official Ford factory product and a car whose entire reputation still rests on Carroll Shelby's personal name and performance-tuning legacy decades after his 2012 death. Built at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan for its modern generations, the GT500's six-decade evolution — from a hand-built, race-inspired big-block conversion to a supercharged, dual-clutch, aerodynamically optimized factory halo car — traces the entire arc of how far Ford was eventually willing to take the Mustang name in pursuit of genuine track-day performance credibility.
