Polynesian Cultural Center
The Polynesian Cultural Center opened in 1963 on Oahu's North Shore, developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partly to provide employment and cultural preservation opportunities for students at the adjacent Brigham Young University–Hawaii campus, many of whom work at the center while attending school. The park is organized into distinct themed villages representing Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Tahiti, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and the Marquesas Islands, each staffed largely by students and performers native to or descended from those specific Pacific Island cultures, offering demonstrations of traditional crafts, dance, and food rather than a generalized "Pacific Islander" presentation. Its nightly luau and stage show, "Hā: Breath of Life," has run for decades as one of the most elaborate Polynesian cultural performances staged anywhere, and the center has become one of the most visited paid attractions in the entire state of Hawaii, drawing millions of visitors since its founding. For a Honolulu attractions list, the Polynesian Cultural Center is the essential "seven cultures, one campus" entry — a 1963 university-adjacent park where students from across the actual Pacific Islands perform and teach the specific traditions of their own home cultures.
VS
Pearl Harbor / USS Arizona Memorial
The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated in 1962, built directly over the sunken remains of the battleship USS Arizona, which was destroyed during the December 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor with the loss of 1,177 crew members — the single deadliest loss of life aboard any ship in the attack that drew the United States into World War II. The memorial's distinctive design, by architect Alfred Preis, deliberately sags in the middle and rises at both ends, a shape the architect described as symbolizing initial defeat followed by ultimate victory, and the structure straddles the sunken hull without touching it, built specifically not to disturb the wreck below. The ship still slowly leaks oil from its submerged fuel tanks more than eight decades after sinking, a phenomenon visitors can see rising to the surface in small iridescent droplets sometimes called the "tears of the Arizona," and the vessel remains an official war grave, with many of the sailors killed in 1941 still entombed within the wreck. For a Honolulu attractions list, the USS Arizona Memorial is the essential "the day the war began" entry — a 1962 memorial built directly over a sunken warship that still leaks oil today, marking the single deadliest ship loss of the attack that drew America into World War II.
