Porsche Cayenne
The Porsche Cayenne launched for the 2003 model year to fierce skepticism from Porsche purists — a sports-car company building a full-size SUV struck many longtime enthusiasts as a betrayal of the brand's identity, and the reaction inside parts of the Porsche fan base at launch was genuinely hostile. That skepticism didn't survive contact with sales figures: the Cayenne became Porsche's best-selling model within a few years of launch, and the revenue it generated is widely credited by industry analysts with funding the continued development of the 911, Boxster, and Cayman sports cars that Porsche's core enthusiast base actually wanted the company to keep building — without the Cayenne's profitability, several of those later sports-car generations may not have been financially viable on their own. Built on a shared platform with the Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7 following Porsche's 2012 full merger into the Volkswagen Group, the Cayenne nonetheless delivered genuine Porsche driving dynamics for the segment — sharper steering and handling than nearly any comparably sized SUV on sale, plus a Turbo variant capable of embarrassing dedicated sports cars on a track, a genuinely unusual capability for a three-row-capable family SUV. Produced at Porsche's Leipzig plant in Germany, the Cayenne's success became the template every other traditional sports-car manufacturer eventually followed — Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Ferrari have all since launched their own SUVs — making the Cayenne, for better or worse in purists' eyes, the vehicle most directly responsible for the modern luxury-performance SUV becoming a permanent fixture of the segment.
VS
Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer launched for the 1991 model year and is widely credited with turning the SUV from a niche, truck-based off-roader into a mainstream family vehicle — it became the best-selling SUV in America almost immediately and held that title through most of the 1990s, a run that helped define the entire decade's shift away from the traditional minivan and station wagon. Its most consequential chapter came in 2000-2001, when a wave of rollover accidents linked to Firestone tires fitted on Explorers led to one of the largest tire recalls in US history and a set of congressional hearings that reshaped federal tire-safety regulation — a genuinely difficult period for the nameplate that Ford spent much of the 2000s working to engineer past with redesigned suspension geometry and, eventually, a shift to a safer unibody platform. That 2011 shift to a car-based unibody chassis, moving away from the traditional truck frame the Explorer had used since 1991, mirrored a broader industry move toward crossover-style SUVs built more for comfort and fuel efficiency than serious off-road use — a transition the Explorer helped popularize just as directly as it had popularized the original truck-based SUV boom a decade earlier. Built at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant, the oldest continuously operating auto plant in the country, the Explorer remains one of the best-selling SUVs in American history and the vehicle most directly responsible for making a three-row SUV the default choice for millions of American families who'd have bought a minivan or wagon a decade earlier.
