Potato Salad
Potato salad arrived in the United States largely through German immigrant communities in the 19th century, who brought their own vinegar-based and mayonnaise-based potato salad traditions with them, and the dish gradually split into distinct regional American styles — a creamy mayonnaise-based version common in the North and a tangier, mustard-forward style especially associated with the South. The dish became a natural fit for outdoor summer gatherings because it could be fully prepared ahead of time and served cold, a genuine practical advantage on a holiday when the grill itself is typically monopolized by burgers, hot dogs, and ribs for hours at a stretch. Large-scale commercial potato salad producers, including Reser's Fine Foods, built substantial businesses over the decades specifically around supplying the deli and picnic-food market with ready-made versions of a dish that's traditionally been a homemade, family-recipe staple passed down across generations. Its combination of make-ahead convenience, deep regional variation reflecting its German immigrant roots, and a cool, creamy contrast to the hot dishes coming off the grill has made potato salad one of the most consistently present side dishes at Fourth of July gatherings across the entire country.
VS
Hot Dogs
Hot dogs have been tied to American Independence Day celebrations for well over a century, and no single event has cemented that connection more than Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, held every July 4th on Coney Island since the stand's founding in 1916, drawing national television coverage and competitive eaters from around the world. The Coney Island stand itself, opened by Polish immigrant Nathan Handwerker with a five-cent hot dog that undercut nearby competitors, became one of the most recognizable hot dog brands in the country well before the eating contest turned July Fourth into its own annual media event. The American hot dog industry estimates that well over 150 million hot dogs are consumed on the Fourth of July alone each year, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, a single-day consumption spike unmatched by any other American food holiday. Its combination of being cheap, fast to cook over any grill, and endlessly customizable by region — from Chicago-style toppings to a simple ketchup-and-mustard classic — has made the hot dog, alongside the hamburger, one of the two dishes most Americans would name first when picturing a Fourth of July cookout.
