Providence College
Providence College, founded in 1917 by the Dominican order, is one of the leading Catholic colleges in New England, and its men's basketball program, competing in the Big East conference, has given the college a national athletic profile disproportionate to its relatively modest overall enrollment. The college's Dominican Friars remain directly involved in campus life and instruction, and Providence's core curriculum, including a distinctive two-year Development of Western Civilization sequence required of all students, reflects the school's continued commitment to a traditional, faith-integrated liberal arts education. Providence's business and health sciences programs have built solid regional reputations, and the college's urban Providence location gives students access to the city's business and healthcare institutions while maintaining a distinct, self-contained campus setting. The college's combination of its Dominican Catholic mission, its distinctive required Western civilization curriculum, and its competitive Big East basketball program has made Providence College one of the more institutionally distinctive Catholic colleges in the Northeast.
VS
Brown University
Brown University, founded in 1764, is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, and its Open Curriculum, adopted in 1969, eliminated nearly all distribution requirements and core coursework mandates, giving students more freedom to design their own academic path than at almost any other Ivy League institution. The university's pass/fail grading option, which students can apply to nearly any course, reflects Brown's broader institutional philosophy of prioritizing genuine intellectual exploration over grade-focused competition, a distinctive approach relative to the more structured curricula at other Ivy League schools. Brown's medical school operates on an unusual accelerated eight-year combined undergraduate-and-medical-degree program, the Program in Liberal Medical Education, letting select students secure medical school admission directly out of high school without the traditional separate, highly competitive post-graduate application process. The university's combination of genuine curricular freedom, its pass/fail grading flexibility, and its Providence, Rhode Island location has made Brown one of the most distinctively student-directed and consistently oversubscribed institutions within the Ivy League.
