PSY
PSY's 2012 single "Gangnam Style" became the first YouTube video to reach one billion views, and its accompanying horse-riding dance became one of the most widely imitated viral dance crazes in internet history, performed by everyone from schoolchildren to major celebrities and even world leaders at public events. The song's satirical lyrics, poking fun at the extravagant lifestyle associated with Seoul's wealthy Gangnam district, gave "Gangnam Style" a layer of social commentary largely lost on much of its massive international audience, who primarily engaged with the song's catchy hook and viral dance rather than its Korean-language satirical content. PSY's breakthrough came years before BTS and BLACKPINK's later global K-pop success, making "Gangnam Style" the genre's first genuine global viral phenomenon and helping introduce a mainstream Western audience to Korean pop music years before the broader K-pop wave that followed. His continued career in South Korea, including work producing and mentoring other Korean artists, has extended PSY's influence within the domestic Korean music industry well beyond his singular global viral moment, even as "Gangnam Style" remains the song most Western audiences still primarily associate with him.
VS
Girls' Generation
Girls' Generation, debuting in 2007 under SM Entertainment, became one of the most commercially successful and influential K-pop girl groups of the genre's earlier globalization period, with their song "Gee" spending a record nine consecutive weeks atop South Korea's major music chart. The group's nine-member lineup and their tightly synchronized choreography, elaborate coordinated styling, and polished vocal performances established much of the visual and structural template that subsequent K-pop girl groups have continued to follow, from large group sizes to highly produced, synchronized stage performances. Girls' Generation's successful expansion into the Japanese market, becoming one of the best-selling foreign girl groups in Japanese music history, demonstrated K-pop's viability as an exportable regional pop phenomenon years before the genre achieved its later broader global breakthrough in Western markets. The group's sustained popularity across more than a decade, despite some membership changes, and their foundational role in establishing K-pop's now-standard group structure and production values have made Girls' Generation one of the most historically significant acts in the genre's development into a global commercial force.
