Public Relations Specialist
Modern public relations as a distinct profession traces significantly to the early 20th century and figures like Edward Bernays, often called the father of public relations, who applied psychological and social science principles to shaping public opinion on behalf of corporate and political clients. Public relations specialists manage an organization's public image and media relationships, writing press releases, coordinating with journalists, and managing communications during company announcements or crises, a role distinct from advertising in that PR primarily seeks earned media coverage rather than paid placements. The profession has expanded significantly to include social media crisis management and influencer relations in recent years, reflecting the shift of public conversation about brands from traditional print and broadcast media toward platforms where negative stories can spread rapidly. Public relations's combination of its roots in Edward Bernays's pioneering application of psychology to public opinion and its modern expansion into social media crisis management has made it one of the most historically significant careers in corporate communications.
VS
Brand Manager
The brand manager role is widely credited to Procter & Gamble, which formalized the position in a landmark 1931 internal memo written by executive Neil McElroy, proposing that each individual product should have a dedicated manager responsible for its complete marketing and business performance. McElroy's brand management system, since known as the "P&G model," became one of the most widely copied organizational structures in the history of consumer marketing, and it remains the foundational template many major consumer packaged goods companies still use today. Brand managers are responsible for a specific product or product line's overall market position, working across advertising, packaging, pricing, and product development to maintain consistent brand identity and drive sales performance for their assigned brand specifically. The brand manager career's direct lineage to Neil McElroy's foundational 1931 P&G memo and its status as one of the most widely replicated organizational structures in consumer marketing has made it one of the most historically influential roles in the industry.
