Publix
Publix was founded in 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida by George W. Jenkins, and it has grown into the largest employee-owned company in the United States, with the majority of its stock held by current and former employees rather than being publicly traded on a stock exchange. The chain has built an unusually strong reputation for customer service and employee satisfaction within the grocery industry, consistently ranking among the most beloved supermarket chains in national customer satisfaction surveys, particularly across its core Southeastern United States footprint. Publix's signature "Pub Sub" deli sandwiches have become a genuine regional cultural touchstone across Florida and the broader Southeast, generating a level of dedicated customer loyalty unusual for a grocery store deli item. Publix's combination of its status as the largest employee-owned company in America and its deeply loyal regional following in the Southeast has made it one of the most distinctively operated grocery chains in the country.
VS
Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods Market opened its first store in Austin, Texas in 1980, founded by John Mackey and three business partners, built from the start around a specific focus on natural and organic foods at a time when that category was still a small niche of the overall grocery industry. The chain grew into the largest dedicated natural and organic grocery retailer in the United States over the following three decades, expanding through both new store openings and the acquisition of numerous smaller regional natural-foods chains. Whole Foods was acquired by Amazon in 2017 for approximately $13.7 billion, one of Amazon's largest acquisitions ever, giving the e-commerce giant its most significant physical retail footprint and enabling integrations like Amazon Prime delivery and discounts directly through Whole Foods stores. Whole Foods Market's combination of its pioneering role building the natural and organic grocery category and its landmark acquisition by Amazon has made it one of the most consequential grocery chains in American retail history.
