Queen Ida
Queen Ida, born Ida Lewis Guillory, became one of zydeco's most significant female figures, winning a Grammy Award in 1982 for her album "On Tour" and becoming one of the first women to lead a major touring zydeco band in a genre historically dominated by male bandleaders. Her family had relocated from Louisiana to California during the mid-20th-century Great Migration, and her career reflected zydeco's broader diaspora beyond its original Louisiana Creole homeland, helping establish a genuine West Coast zydeco scene distinct from the genre's Louisiana base. Queen Ida's Grammy Award recognition came specifically in the "Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording" category, part of a broader wave of mainstream American cultural recognition for zydeco during the early 1980s that Clifton Chenier's own Grammy the following year would extend further. Her combination of her groundbreaking role as a female zydeco bandleader and her Grammy-winning recognition has made Queen Ida one of the most historically significant women in the genre's entire history.
VS
Rockin' Dopsie
Rockin' Dopsie, born Alton Rubin, became one of zydeco's most internationally recognized ambassadors during the 1980s, performing with his band the Twisters at major international festivals and collaborating with rock musicians including Paul Simon, whose 1986 album "Graceland" featured Dopsie's band. That "Graceland" collaboration introduced zydeco to a massive global pop audience that had likely never previously encountered the genre, giving Dopsie a level of mainstream international visibility that few other traditional zydeco musicians of his era achieved. His energetic live performances, incorporating showmanship elements alongside his accordion playing, made Dopsie one of zydeco's most popular touring acts internationally, helping introduce the genre to European and other international audiences well beyond Louisiana and the broader American South. His combination of his high-profile Paul Simon collaboration and his role as one of zydeco's most internationally touring ambassadors has made Rockin' Dopsie one of the genre's most globally significant figures.
