Raging Bull
Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 1980, chronicles the rise and self-destructive decline of boxer Jake LaMotta, and Robert De Niro's performance, which included gaining nearly 60 pounds to portray LaMotta's post-retirement physical deterioration, won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The film's black-and-white cinematography, an unusual choice for a film released in 1980, was reportedly chosen partly to distinguish the movie visually from the era's flood of color boxing films and partly to evoke the specific historical period of LaMotta's 1940s and '50s boxing career. Scorsese's unflinching depiction of LaMotta's genuinely unlikable personal behavior, including his violent jealousy and abuse toward his wife and brother, distinguished Raging Bull from more conventionally heroic sports biopics, presenting its central figure without softening his real-life flaws for greater audience sympathy. The film's boxing sequences, shot with unusually intimate, subjective camera placement designed to convey the visceral brutality LaMotta experienced in the ring, are widely regarded as among the most technically accomplished boxing scenes ever filmed, and Raging Bull is frequently cited as one of the greatest films of the 1980s.

Malcolm X
Malcolm X, directed by Spike Lee and released in 1992, traces the life of the civil rights leader from his early years involved in criminal activity through his conversion to Islam in prison, his rise as a prominent Nation of Islam minister, and his eventual assassination in 1965. Denzel Washington's performance in the title role, capturing Malcolm X's evolution across dramatically different phases of his life and ideology, is widely regarded as one of the finest biographical film performances ever delivered, and his Academy Award nomination for the role remains one of the most frequently cited "should have won" snubs in Oscars history. Lee's more than three-hour runtime allowed the film to depict Malcolm X's full ideological journey, including his eventual break from the Nation of Islam and his subsequent embrace of a more inclusive vision of racial justice following his pilgrimage to Mecca, giving the film unusual narrative space to portray genuine ideological complexity and change. The film was made with significant creative and financial obstacles, including funding gaps that led prominent Black public figures, including Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan, to personally contribute funds to help complete production, reflecting the cultural significance many attached to ensuring the film's proper completion.
