Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach, on Chicago's South Side, offers one of the widest and most spacious stretches of Lake Michigan sand in the city, along with a significant piece of civil rights history: the site of organized 1960s wade-in protests challenging the beach's then-informal segregation. Those demonstrations, part of the broader civil rights movement's push for equal access to Chicago's public recreational spaces, make Rainbow Beach one of the more historically significant beaches on the city's shoreline, a history the surrounding park and community have worked to preserve and commemorate. Its position on the South Side, somewhat removed from the North Side's denser concentration of beaches, has made it a particularly important recreational resource for South Side neighborhoods historically underserved relative to the city's more heavily invested-in North Side lakefront. For a Chicago beaches list, Rainbow Beach is the essential "civil rights history on the sand" entry — a wide South Side beach and the site of 1960s wade-in protests against segregated beach access, carrying real historical weight alongside its recreational role today.
VS
12th Street Beach
12th Street Beach, on the Museum Campus's Northerly Island peninsula, offers one of the most scenic vantage points on the entire Chicago lakefront, with direct views of the downtown skyline framed alongside Soldier Field and the city's cluster of major lakefront museums. Its position within Northerly Island, a former airport turned nature park following the controversial 2003 demolition of Meigs Field, gives the beach access to restored prairie habitat and walking trails immediately adjacent to the sand, a genuinely different surrounding landscape than Chicago's more purely urban beaches. The beach's relatively small size and less commercially developed surroundings, compared to the bar-and-restaurant scene at North Avenue Beach, give it a quieter, more scenic character specifically suited to skyline photography and casual sunbathing over an active social beach scene. For a Chicago beaches list, 12th Street Beach is the essential "the skyline photo op" entry — a Museum Campus-adjacent beach on a former airport turned nature park, offering one of the most classically photographed views of Chicago's downtown skyline.
