Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach, on Chicago's South Side, offers one of the widest and most spacious stretches of Lake Michigan sand in the city, along with a significant piece of civil rights history: the site of organized 1960s wade-in protests challenging the beach's then-informal segregation. Those demonstrations, part of the broader civil rights movement's push for equal access to Chicago's public recreational spaces, make Rainbow Beach one of the more historically significant beaches on the city's shoreline, a history the surrounding park and community have worked to preserve and commemorate. Its position on the South Side, somewhat removed from the North Side's denser concentration of beaches, has made it a particularly important recreational resource for South Side neighborhoods historically underserved relative to the city's more heavily invested-in North Side lakefront. For a Chicago beaches list, Rainbow Beach is the essential "civil rights history on the sand" entry — a wide South Side beach and the site of 1960s wade-in protests against segregated beach access, carrying real historical weight alongside its recreational role today.
VS
North Avenue Beach
North Avenue Beach, anchored by its distinctive steamship-shaped beach house built in 2000, is Chicago's most popular and heavily used Lake Michigan beach, drawing dense summer crowds for volleyball, swimming, and its long-running outdoor bar and restaurant scene right on the sand. Its dense concentration of public volleyball courts has made it one of the most significant beach volleyball hubs in the Midwest, hosting regular tournaments and drawing a dedicated local playing community throughout the summer months. The beach's position along the Lakefront Trail, Chicago's roughly 18-mile multi-use path running the length of the city's Lake Michigan shoreline, makes it a constant stop for cyclists and runners passing through, adding steady foot and bike traffic beyond just beachgoers. For a Chicago beaches list, North Avenue Beach is the essential "the main event" entry — a steamship-shaped beach house anchoring the city's busiest and most volleyball-dense stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline.
