Rainbow Row
Rainbow Row is a stretch of thirteen colorful historic houses along East Bay Street, built originally in the mid-18th century as merchants' homes and shops with commercial space on the ground floor and residences above, typical of Charleston's dense pre-Revolutionary commercial waterfront architecture. The row fell into serious disrepair by the early 20th century, and its now-famous pastel color scheme dates only to a 1930s restoration led by Dorothy Porcher Legge, who purchased and repainted several of the houses in vivid Caribbean-inspired hues — a genuinely modern aesthetic choice rather than a historically accurate restoration of the buildings' original 18th-century appearance. That restoration effort helped catalyze Charleston's broader historic preservation movement, and the city went on to establish one of the first historic preservation zoning ordinances in the entire country, directly protecting Rainbow Row and the surrounding French Quarter district from the kind of demolition and redevelopment that erased comparable historic waterfronts in many other American port cities. For a Charleston attractions list, Rainbow Row is the essential "the pastel houses that saved a preservation movement" entry — mid-18th-century merchant houses whose 1930s color-scheme restoration helped launch one of the country's earliest historic preservation ordinances.
VS
Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter is where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces opened fire on the Union-held fort in Charleston Harbor, beginning a 34-hour bombardment that ended in the fort's surrender and marked the formal start of four years of war. The fort was built starting in 1829 as part of a coastal defense system protecting Charleston's harbor, constructed on an artificial island made from granite shipped down from New England specifically because the harbor's soft, sandy bottom couldn't support the fort's weight on its own. Fort Sumter changed hands and endured repeated Union bombardment throughout the war, and the fort's physical structure was substantially reduced from its original three-story height by the sustained shelling, leaving the lower, more heavily damaged profile visitors see preserved today rather than the fort's original imposing form. For a Charleston attractions list, Fort Sumter is the essential "where the war actually started" entry — an 1829 harbor defense fort reduced by its own wartime bombardment, still reachable only by the same boat crossing that's marked the site since the National Park Service took it over.
