Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren, born Ralph Lifshitz in the Bronx, founded his fashion company in 1967, initially designing a line of wide neckties before expanding into a full menswear line under the Polo brand, eventually growing into one of the largest American fashion empires ever built. Lauren's aesthetic, built around aspirational depictions of preppy East Coast old-money American style, complete with polo players, country clubs, and Ivy League imagery, created a specific lifestyle brand identity that sold an entire idealized version of American life alongside the clothing itself. The company's advertising campaigns, using elaborate lifestyle photography rather than simply showcasing the clothing itself, became a widely influential template for lifestyle-brand marketing that numerous subsequent fashion and consumer brands directly modeled their own advertising strategies after. Ralph Lauren's combination of his aspirational all-American lifestyle brand identity and his pioneering lifestyle-driven advertising approach has made him one of the most commercially successful fashion designers and brand builders in American history.
VS
Vera Wang
Vera Wang worked as a figure skater and later a Vogue editor for over fifteen years before transitioning into fashion design at age 40, launching her own bridal design house in 1990 after reportedly struggling to find a wedding dress she liked for her own wedding. Wang's bridal designs became closely associated with celebrity weddings, and her reputation for elegant, modern wedding gown design fundamentally reshaped the American bridal fashion industry, moving it away from more traditional, conservative styles toward more architecturally sophisticated designs. Wang's later expansion beyond bridal wear into ready-to-wear fashion, fragrance, and home goods demonstrated a successful brand extension from a highly specialized niche (bridal fashion) into a broader lifestyle brand, a transition that proved more difficult for many other designers who began in specialized fashion categories. Vera Wang's combination of her unusual late-career transition into fashion design and her transformative influence on modern American bridal fashion has made her one of the most significant fashion designers of her generation.
