Ram 1500
The Ram 1500, sold simply as the Dodge Ram until Chrysler spun Ram off as its own standalone truck brand in 2010, distinguished itself from Ford and Chevrolet's full-size rivals with a specific suspension engineering choice: a coil-spring rear suspension, introduced in the fourth-generation Ram in 2009, in place of the leaf-spring setups every other full-size truck in the segment used at the time. That coil-spring rear end gave the Ram a noticeably smoother, more car-like ride quality than its leaf-spring competitors, a genuine differentiator in a segment where most buyers had simply accepted a stiffer, truck-like ride as an unavoidable trade-off for towing capability — and it became one of the most consistently praised aspects of the Ram in independent reviews for over a decade afterward. The Ram's HEMI V8 engines, using a modernized version of Chrysler's legendary hemispherical-combustion-chamber design first popularized in 1960s muscle cars, gave the truck a distinctive engine-note and performance reputation that set it apart from the more work-focused engine lineups Ford and Chevrolet emphasized in their own full-size truck marketing. Built at Chrysler's Sterling Heights and Warren, Michigan plants, the Ram 1500's decision to prioritize on-road ride comfort and a distinctive engine heritage over the more purely utilitarian approach of its rivals carved out a genuinely different identity within the full-size truck segment, one that's kept it a consistent top-three seller in the category for well over a decade.
VS
Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger was the best-selling compact pickup truck in America through most of the 1980s and '90s, offering a genuinely smaller, more affordable, and easier-to-park alternative to the full-size F-150 at a time when compact trucks from Ford, Toyota, Nissan, and Chevrolet's S-10 all competed fiercely for the same budget-conscious and first-time-truck-buyer segment. Ford discontinued the Ranger in the US after the 2011 model year, even as the global version of the truck continued selling strongly in markets like Australia, South America, and Southeast Asia — a decision that, in hindsight, meant Ford voluntarily ceded the entire compact-truck category to Toyota's Tacoma for nearly a decade, right as SUV and truck sales were beginning their long climb as a share of the overall US market. Ford brought the Ranger back to the US for the 2019 model year, built on the same global "T6" platform underpinning the international Ranger sold across dozens of markets worldwide, specifically to re-enter a midsize truck segment that had grown substantially in Ford's absence and that competitors like the Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Jeep Gladiator had spent the intervening years fighting over without Ford in the mix at all. Built at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant for the US market, the Ranger's decade-long US absence and subsequent return remains one of the more notable strategic reversals in recent pickup-truck history — a genuine acknowledgment that abandoning the compact/midsize segment in 2011 had been a miscalculation Ford spent the 2019 relaunch actively trying to correct.
