Rampage
"Rampage" (2018), starring Dwayne Johnson and based loosely on the classic 1986 arcade video game, follows a primatologist working to stop three genetically mutated giant animals rampaging across American cities, bringing kaiju-adjacent giant monster spectacle to a mainstream contemporary Hollywood blockbuster format. Its video game origins, adapting source material built around simple city-destroying arcade gameplay rather than a developed narrative, required substantial original story development to give the film's monster mayhem a coherent plot and emotional throughline centered on Johnson's relationship with his mutated gorilla companion. The film's modern digital effects work, depicting large-scale urban destruction across a Chicago-set climax, continued the broader 2010s trend of American blockbuster filmmaking directly engaging with kaiju genre conventions previously associated primarily with Japanese cinema. Its combination of its video game source material adaptation and its mainstream American blockbuster treatment of kaiju genre conventions has made "Rampage" one of the more commercially notable recent entries bringing giant-monster spectacle to wide multiplex audiences.
VS
Shin Godzilla
"Shin Godzilla" (2016), a Toho reboot directed by Hideaki Anno, reimagined the original creature through the lens of Japan's real 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster and its government's response, restoring the franchise's original serious disaster-allegory tone after decades of increasingly lighter, more heroic-Godzilla entries. Its detailed depiction of Japanese government bureaucracy struggling to respond effectively to the unprecedented crisis, spending significant screen time on inter-agency meetings and procedural gridlock, gave the film a distinctly satirical, process-focused dimension uncommon in the broader kaiju genre. The film's critical and commercial success in Japan, becoming one of the highest-grossing Japanese-language films of the year, demonstrated the character's continued cultural relevance and box office viability more than six decades after the franchise's original 1954 debut. Its combination of its return to the franchise's serious disaster-allegory roots and its pointed bureaucratic satire has made "Shin Godzilla" one of the most critically acclaimed entries in the entire Godzilla franchise.
