Ramy Ashour
Ramy Ashour won the World Open championship twice and was widely regarded by fellow players and coaches as the most naturally talented and technically gifted squash player of his generation, known for an unpredictable, improvisational playing style that made him exceptionally difficult for opponents to prepare against. His combination of exceptional court movement, deceptive shot-making, and an almost effortless-looking physical style earned him comparisons to elite performers in other sports whose technical ability appeared to exceed conventional understanding of what was physically possible within their discipline's constraints. Ashour's career was repeatedly interrupted by serious hamstring injuries, which cost him significant playing time during what many considered his competitive prime, and his combined injury history is frequently cited as the primary reason his total championship count fell short of what his sheer talent level might otherwise have produced. Despite the injury-shortened nature of his peak years, Ashour's technical influence on subsequent generations of squash players has been substantial, and he's still widely cited within the professional squash community as one of the most naturally gifted players ever to compete in the sport, regardless of his final championship total.
VS
Nicol David
Nicol David held the world number one ranking in women's squash for a combined 108 consecutive months, one of the longest sustained periods of individual sport dominance across any discipline, and she won the World Open championship eight times across her career, tying the record for most in the tournament's history. Her rise established Malaysia as a genuine power in international squash, a sport the country had little previous history of producing elite competitors in, and David's sustained success made her one of Malaysia's most celebrated athletes across any sport during her competitive prime. David's technical consistency and tactical court intelligence, rather than pure physical power, defined her playing style, and her ability to maintain the world number one ranking for such an extended, largely uninterrupted period reflected a level of week-to-week competitive reliability rarely matched in individual racquet sports. Her combined eight World Open titles and record-setting time at world number one established David as the dominant figure in women's squash throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, and her success helped significantly raise the sport's profile across Southeast Asia during her competitive career.
