Randy's Donuts
Randy's Donuts, opened near the Los Angeles International Airport in 1953, is instantly recognizable for its enormous rooftop donut sculpture, a piece of programmatic "googie" roadside architecture that has made it one of the most photographed buildings in Los Angeles. The shop's giant rooftop donut has appeared as a backdrop in numerous films and television productions, including "Iron Man 2" and "Californication," giving the shop a level of pop-culture visibility that few other independent donut shops have ever achieved. Randy's has remained open 24 hours a day for decades, serving as both a genuine neighborhood donut shop and an enduring only-in-LA tourist landmark, a combination that helped the brand later expand into additional Southern California locations while preserving its original iconic building. Randy's Donuts's combination of its instantly recognizable giant rooftop donut and its extensive film and television appearances has made it one of the most visually iconic donut shops in the country.
VS
Dunkin'
Dunkin', founded as Dunkin' Donuts by William Rosenberg in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950, grew into one of the largest coffee-and-donut chains in the world, and its 2018 rebrand to simply "Dunkin'" reflected the company's own data showing that beverages, especially coffee, had become the dominant driver of its business over donuts themselves. The chain's deep regional identity in the Northeastern United States, particularly in its native Massachusetts, made it a genuine cultural touchstone associated with New England daily life, memorably reflected in its long-running "America Runs on Dunkin'" advertising campaign. Dunkin's massive franchise network, with thousands of locations concentrated especially densely in the Northeast, gave it an outsized regional market presence that in certain metro areas exceeded even Starbucks's national coffee-chain footprint. Dunkin's combination of its historic Northeastern cultural identity and its successful strategic pivot from a donut-first to a coffee-first brand has made it one of the most commercially significant donut-and-coffee chains in the country.
