Raymond van Barneveld
Raymond van Barneveld, nicknamed "Barney," won five World Darts Championship titles across both the BDO and PDC organizations, including a memorable 2007 PDC title win in just his second year competing in that organization after switching over from the rival BDO. Van Barneveld was the first Dutch player to achieve genuine global stardom in professional darts, and his success during the 1990s and 2000s helped lay the groundwork for the Netherlands' emergence as one of the sport's deepest talent pools, a legacy later carried forward by Michael van Gerwen's generation of Dutch players. His 2014 World Championship semifinal victory over Michael van Gerwen, delivered as the elder statesman defeating the sport's new dominant force, is remembered as one of the most emotionally charged matches of the decade, given the symbolic passing-of-the-torch dynamic between the two Dutch stars. Van Barneveld's decision to retire in 2020, followed by an unretirement just two years later after finding he missed full-time competition, reflected the same competitive stubbornness that had defined his playing career, and his five world titles across two competing organizations remain the standard by which other Dutch darts players are measured.
VS
Jocky Wilson
Jocky Wilson won two World Darts Championship titles, in 1982 and 1989, and became one of the most beloved figures of darts' 1980s boom period despite an unglamorous, self-deprecating public image built around his short stature, thick Scottish accent, and openly working-class background. Wilson's rise from a Scottish mining town, where he'd worked in a coal mine before finding success in darts, made him a relatable underdog figure to British television audiences during an era when the sport was drawing viewership numbers that rivaled more traditional mainstream sports. His 1982 World Championship win came against a strong field that included several of the era's other dominant players, and Wilson's ability to compete at the very top of the sport despite lacking the polished public persona of rivals like Eric Bristow made him a fan favorite specifically because of, rather than despite, his rough-around-the-edges image. Wilson's career and personal life were affected by struggles with alcohol and health issues later in life, struggles that became part of the broader, more sobering conversation about the personal toll of the 1980s darts boom on some of its biggest stars, even as his two world titles secured his place among the sport's genuine greats.
