Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, established in 1990 and managed by the Bureau of Land Management, sits just a short drive west of the Las Vegas Strip, offering a dramatic contrast between the neon-lit resort corridor and the area's ancient red sandstone formations, some dating back roughly 180 million years. The park's 13-mile scenic drive loop lets visitors experience the canyon's rock formations largely by car, while an extensive network of hiking trails leads to features including natural sandstone arches, seasonal waterfalls, and some of the most popular traditional and sport rock-climbing routes in the entire American Southwest. The area's dramatic color banding in the rock, ranging from deep red to cream and gray, results from a geological process called Aztec Sandstone thrust faulting, in which older gray limestone was pushed up and over the younger red sandstone, creating the visually striking layered cliffs visible throughout the park today. For a Las Vegas attractions list, Red Rock Canyon is the essential "the desert Vegas is actually built in" entry — a 180-million-year-old sandstone landscape just minutes from the Strip, offering scenic drives, hiking, and world-class rock climbing a world away from the casino floor.
VS
Bellagio Fountains
The Bellagio Fountains opened alongside the resort itself in 1998, designed by WET Design, the same firm behind numerous other major water-feature installations worldwide, and built into an eight-acre man-made lake directly in front of the hotel along the Las Vegas Strip. The choreographed water show synchronizes more than 1,200 individual water jets — some launching water over 460 feet into the air — to a rotating library of musical scores ranging from classical pieces to pop songs and Broadway numbers, with shows running at regular intervals throughout the day and evening entirely free to watch from the sidewalk. The fountains were built using a technology WET Design specifically engineered for the project, called the "oarsman," a piston-actuated mechanism capable of producing more precise and dynamic water movements synchronized to music than earlier fountain technologies could achieve. For a Las Vegas attractions list, the Bellagio Fountains are the essential "the free show everyone stops for" entry — a 1998 eight-acre water installation whose musically choreographed jets have become one of the most photographed free spectacles anywhere on the Strip.
