Reed College
Reed College, founded in 1908, has built a reputation as one of the most academically rigorous and intellectually intense liberal arts colleges in the country, with a curriculum that requires every student to complete a substantial senior thesis and defend it orally before a faculty committee, a graduation requirement Reed treats as central to its educational philosophy. The college's distinctive academic culture deliberately downplays traditional grades — while Reed does record grades internally, students don't typically see their own grades unless they specifically request them, reflecting the college's institutional emphasis on learning for its own sake rather than competitive grade-chasing. Reed produces a disproportionately high number of graduates who go on to complete PhDs relative to the college's small size, a statistic Reed actively tracks and promotes, and the college's rigorous, discussion-based Humanities 110 program, required of all first-year students, has remained largely unchanged in its core structure for decades. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously attended Reed for a single semester before dropping out, though he continued auditing courses on campus, including a calligraphy class he later credited as directly influencing Apple's early typography design — a frequently told story that's become closely associated with the college's broader identity.
VS
Oregon State University
Oregon State University, founded in 1868 as the state's land-grant institution, holds the rare "Triple Crown" designation as a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university simultaneously, reflecting a research mission spanning agriculture, ocean and coastal science, and aerospace research. The university's College of Forestry and its oceanography programs have built particularly strong national reputations, drawing directly on Oregon's extensive coastline and forested landscape, and OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center on the Oregon coast gives students direct access to significant marine research infrastructure. OSU's engineering and computer science programs have grown substantially in recent decades, benefiting from proximity to the broader Pacific Northwest technology industry corridor extending from Seattle through Portland, and the university's veterinary medicine program remains one of the strongest in the region. The university's Corvallis campus and its continued strength across agriculture, forestry, and ocean sciences reflect Oregon State's land-grant founding mission, and its combination of applied science strength and rising engineering programs has made it a significant complement to the University of Oregon within the state's public university system.
