Reed College
Reed College, founded in 1908, has built a reputation as one of the most academically rigorous and intellectually intense liberal arts colleges in the country, with a curriculum that requires every student to complete a substantial senior thesis and defend it orally before a faculty committee, a graduation requirement Reed treats as central to its educational philosophy. The college's distinctive academic culture deliberately downplays traditional grades — while Reed does record grades internally, students don't typically see their own grades unless they specifically request them, reflecting the college's institutional emphasis on learning for its own sake rather than competitive grade-chasing. Reed produces a disproportionately high number of graduates who go on to complete PhDs relative to the college's small size, a statistic Reed actively tracks and promotes, and the college's rigorous, discussion-based Humanities 110 program, required of all first-year students, has remained largely unchanged in its core structure for decades. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously attended Reed for a single semester before dropping out, though he continued auditing courses on campus, including a calligraphy class he later credited as directly influencing Apple's early typography design — a frequently told story that's become closely associated with the college's broader identity.
VS
Portland State University
Portland State University, founded in 1946 to serve returning World War II veterans, has grown into Oregon's largest urban public university, with a campus fully integrated into downtown Portland rather than a separate, self-contained campus setting typical of most other Oregon public universities. The university's urban studies and planning program is consistently ranked among the best in the country, drawing directly on Portland's own reputation as a nationally significant model for urban planning, public transit integration, and sustainable city design. PSU's business and engineering programs have built increasingly strong reputations, and the university's direct integration into downtown Portland gives students significant access to internships across the city's business, government, and nonprofit sectors without needing to commute to a separate campus. The university's urban, non-traditional campus setting and its particular strength in urban planning, drawing directly on Portland's own planning reputation, have made PSU a distinctive choice among Oregon's public universities, particularly for students interested in urban policy, planning, or public administration careers.
