Reed College
Reed College, founded in 1908, has built a reputation as one of the most academically rigorous and intellectually intense liberal arts colleges in the country, with a curriculum that requires every student to complete a substantial senior thesis and defend it orally before a faculty committee, a graduation requirement Reed treats as central to its educational philosophy. The college's distinctive academic culture deliberately downplays traditional grades — while Reed does record grades internally, students don't typically see their own grades unless they specifically request them, reflecting the college's institutional emphasis on learning for its own sake rather than competitive grade-chasing. Reed produces a disproportionately high number of graduates who go on to complete PhDs relative to the college's small size, a statistic Reed actively tracks and promotes, and the college's rigorous, discussion-based Humanities 110 program, required of all first-year students, has remained largely unchanged in its core structure for decades. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously attended Reed for a single semester before dropping out, though he continued auditing courses on campus, including a calligraphy class he later credited as directly influencing Apple's early typography design — a frequently told story that's become closely associated with the college's broader identity.
VS
Willamette University
Willamette University, founded in 1842, is the oldest university in the western United States, chartered years before Oregon achieved statehood, and its Salem, Oregon campus sits directly adjacent to the Oregon State Capitol building, giving political science and government students unusually direct proximity to actual state government operations. The university's College of Law, one of the oldest law schools on the West Coast, and its Atkinson Graduate School of Management have each built solid regional reputations, and Willamette's small undergraduate college maintains close faculty engagement typical of traditional liberal arts colleges despite its broader university structure. Willamette's proximity to the Oregon State Capitol has historically supported a robust internship pipeline for students interested in state government and public policy, letting undergraduates gain direct legislative and policy experience during the academic year rather than only through summer internships elsewhere. The university's combination of genuine historical seniority as the oldest western university, direct physical proximity to state government, and a traditional liberal arts undergraduate core has made Willamette a distinctive choice for students specifically interested in law, government, or public policy careers.
