Reiner Klimke
Reiner Klimke won six Olympic gold medals in dressage across a career spanning from 1964 to 1988, establishing himself as one of the most decorated equestrians in Olympic history and a foundational figure in Germany's sustained dominance of the discipline. His combination of technical precision and his sustained excellence across six different Olympics, spanning nearly a quarter century, reflected remarkable career longevity in a sport that demands an unusually close, sustained partnership between rider and horse. Klimke, who also held a doctorate in law and practiced as an attorney alongside his competitive riding career, reflected the amateur tradition that historically characterized elite equestrian sport before the discipline's later professionalization. His combined six Olympic gold medals across six different Games established Klimke as the foundational figure in Germany's continued dominance of dressage, a legacy that riders including Isabell Werth carried forward in subsequent decades.
VS
Ian Millar
Ian Millar competed at 10 Olympic Games across a career spanning from 1972 to 2012, more Olympic appearances than any other athlete in history across any sport, reflecting equestrian show jumping's unique capacity to sustain elite competitive careers across an unusually long span of decades. Nicknamed "Captain Canada," Millar finally won his first individual Olympic medal, a silver, at the 2008 Beijing Games at 61 years old, capping a remarkably patient career that included numerous near-misses across his earlier Olympic appearances. His sustained presence at the top of Canadian and international show jumping across four decades established Millar as one of the most respected figures in the sport, and his training base at Spruce Meadows in Alberta became one of the most significant show jumping venues in North America. His record 10 Olympic appearances and his eventual individual medal breakthrough late in his career have made Millar one of the most historically significant and enduringly competitive figures across the entire history of Olympic sport, regardless of discipline.
