Resident Evil
Resident Evil, released in 2002 and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, launched one of the most commercially successful and longest-running video game film franchises in history, ultimately spanning six films over 15 years and grossing more than $1 billion combined worldwide. Milla Jovovich's performance as the franchise's central protagonist across all six films gave the series a consistent lead presence rare among long-running film franchises, and her extensive physical stunt work throughout the series established her as one of action cinema's most significant female stars. The film's loose adaptation of the source video game's zombie-outbreak premise, incorporating original characters and storylines not directly drawn from the games, reflected a broader strategy of using established game IP as a launching point for original franchise storytelling rather than strict game-plot fidelity. Resident Evil's sustained multi-film commercial success, despite generally lukewarm critical reception throughout its run, demonstrated video game adaptations' viability as long-term franchise properties even without strong critical acclaim, a commercial lesson that influenced subsequent studio approaches to game-based film franchises.
VS
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, became the highest-grossing video game film adaptation in history by a substantial margin, and its massive commercial success significantly reshaped the film industry's confidence in adapting major video game properties, following decades of the genre's generally poor box-office and critical track record. Nintendo's unusually direct and hands-on involvement in the film's production, a departure from the company's historically cautious approach to licensing its characters for outside film adaptations, reflected a deliberate strategy to maintain creative control over Mario's big-screen depiction. The film's animated format, produced by Illumination rather than attempting a live-action adaptation, avoided the visual translation problems that had plagued earlier video game films attempting to render cartoonish game characters and worlds in live-action, a lesson widely credited to the notoriously poorly received 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. film. Its massive commercial success has directly influenced subsequent major studios' willingness to invest in additional big-budget video game adaptations, and the film is frequently cited as the moment the video game movie genre's long-standing commercial and critical curse was finally broken.
