Rhode Island School of Design
Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877, is consistently ranked among the very best art and design schools in the world, and its cross-registration agreement with neighboring Brown University lets RISD students take courses at Brown while Brown students can similarly access RISD's specialized art and design instruction. The school's industrial design, illustration, and architecture programs have produced a disproportionate number of prominent working designers and artists relative to RISD's small size, and its alumni have gone on to significant careers across fashion, product design, animation, and fine art. RISD's rigorous foundational first-year curriculum, requiring all students regardless of eventual major to complete intensive coursework in drawing, design, and three-dimensional studies, reflects the school's institutional emphasis on building strong technical fundamentals before specialization. The school's combination of world-class art and design instruction and its direct cross-registration relationship with Brown University has made RISD one of the most academically rigorous and selective art schools in the country, offering a genuinely unusual hybrid of conservatory-level art training and access to a major research university.
VS
Roger Williams University
Roger Williams University, founded in 1956 and named for Rhode Island's colonial founder, has built solid architecture and marine biology programs, drawing directly on the university's scenic Bristol, Rhode Island campus overlooking Mount Hope Bay. The university's law school, one of the newer law schools in New England, has built a growing regional reputation, and RWU's continued investment in its waterfront campus facilities reflects the university's broader emphasis on experiential, hands-on learning tied to its coastal setting. Roger Williams's architecture program benefits from direct access to New England's historic coastal architecture and shipbuilding tradition, giving students a distinctive regional context for studying architectural history and design. The university's combination of its scenic waterfront campus, its architecture and marine biology program strengths, and its growing law school has made Roger Williams a distinctive choice among Rhode Island's private universities.
