Rhodes College
Rhodes College, founded in 1848, is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the South, and its Gothic Revival campus in Memphis, built largely from stone quarried specifically to match the architectural style of Oxford and Cambridge, is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful small college campuses in the country. The college's Memphis location gives students direct access to the city's healthcare, logistics, and music industries, and Rhodes's pre-health advising program has built a particularly strong reputation for placing graduates into medical and other health professional schools. Rhodes's small size, around 2,000 undergraduates, and its close proximity to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital give science-focused students unusual access to a major pediatric research institution's internship and research opportunities directly within the same city. The college's combination of a genuinely striking Oxford-inspired campus, strong pre-health preparation, and Memphis's specific concentration of healthcare and logistics employers has made Rhodes a distinctive choice among Southern liberal arts colleges, particularly for students interested in medicine.

Sewanee: The University of the South
Sewanee: The University of the South, founded in 1857 by Episcopal dioceses across the American South, sits on a 13,000-acre campus known as "the Domain" atop the Cumberland Plateau, giving it one of the largest and most physically dramatic campus footprints of any small liberal arts college in the country. The university's continued Episcopal Church affiliation and governance structure, in which a group of Southern Episcopal dioceses collectively hold ownership, is unique among American colleges, and Sewanee's School of Theology trains clergy for the Episcopal Church alongside the undergraduate liberal arts college. Sewanee's English department and its literary magazine, The Sewanee Review, one of the oldest continuously published literary quarterlies in the country, have built a strong reputation within American literary circles disproportionate to the college's small size. The university's honor code, extensive wilderness domain available for outdoor recreation and environmental study, and its distinctive Episcopal governance structure have made Sewanee one of the most physically and institutionally distinctive small liberal arts colleges in the South.
