Rice University
Rice University was founded through the 1912 endowment of cotton and lumber magnate William Marsh Rice, whose murder by his own lawyer and butler in a scheme to seize his fortune became one of the most notorious criminal cases of its era before the estate was ultimately secured for the university he'd intended to fund. Rice's tuition-free policy lasted for more than five decades, a founding commitment that helped the small university build a reputation for academic rigor without the financial exclusivity of many peer institutions, before rising costs eventually forced the school to begin charging tuition in the 1960s. President John F. Kennedy delivered his famous "We choose to go to the Moon" speech at Rice Stadium in 1962, a moment that reflected the university's close relationship with the nearby NASA Johnson Space Center — a connection that continues to shape Rice's engineering and space science programs today. With one of the smallest undergraduate enrollments among the country's top research universities, fewer than 4,500 students, and a widely cited "residential college" system that groups students into small, tight-knit communities from freshman year on, Rice consistently ranks as the most academically prestigious university in Texas.
VS
University of Texas at Austin
The University of Texas at Austin, founded in 1883, is the flagship campus of the UT System and one of the largest research universities in the country, enrolling more than 50,000 students across a sprawling downtown Austin campus that puts it at the geographic and cultural center of one of America's fastest-growing cities. UT Austin's endowment is funded in significant part by the Permanent University Fund, a constitutionally established trust built on oil and gas royalties from state-owned land — a financing structure unique among American public universities that has given UT Austin resources rivaling many private institutions. The McCombs School of Business and Cockrell School of Engineering both rank among the top public-university programs in their fields nationally, and UT Austin's computer science department has become one of the country's leading producers of software engineering talent for both Austin's own growing tech sector and Silicon Valley. UT Austin's Longhorns athletic program, one of the most valuable in college sports, and its massive statewide alumni network give the university an outsized cultural and economic footprint across Texas that extends well beyond its academic reputation alone.
