Richard Pryor
Richard Pryor transformed stand-up comedy in the early 1970s by abandoning the more conventional, sanitized material of his early career in favor of raw, deeply personal routines about race, poverty, and his own troubled life, fundamentally reshaping what stand-up comedy could address. His 1979 concert film "Richard Pryor: Live in Concert" is widely regarded by critics and fellow comedians as one of the greatest stand-up performances ever filmed, and comedians across generations, including Carlin, Chappelle, and Rock, have cited Pryor as their single greatest influence. Pryor's willingness to discuss his 1980 near-fatal freebase cocaine accident directly in his subsequent stand-up material, turning one of the most harrowing moments of his life into unflinching comedic material, became a defining example of his commitment to total personal honesty on stage. Pryor's combination of his genre-transforming personal honesty and his nearly universal recognition among fellow comedians as the medium's greatest influence has made him one of the most significant stand-up comedians in American history.
VS
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy joined "Saturday Night Live" at just 19 years old in 1980 and is widely credited with helping save the show during a critically panned early-1980s period, before launching a stand-up career alongside his film work that produced two landmark concert films. His 1983 concert film "Delirious" and 1987 follow-up "Raw" are both frequently cited among the greatest stand-up specials ever recorded, showcasing the same high-energy, character-driven performance style that also defined his film comedy work throughout the decade. Murphy's subsequent decades-long film career, spanning broad studio comedies and later more dramatic and family-oriented roles, made him one of the most commercially successful actors to emerge from a stand-up comedy background. Murphy's combination of his history-making early "Saturday Night Live" run and his landmark "Delirious" and "Raw" concert films has made him one of the most influential comedians in American entertainment history.
