Richard Wagner
Richard Wagner's operas, particularly his four-opera Ring Cycle, dramatically expanded both the length and structural ambition of opera as a form, with the complete Ring Cycle running more than 15 hours across its four constituent operas performed over multiple consecutive evenings. Wagner personally designed and built the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, an opera house constructed specifically to stage his own works according to his exacting specifications for acoustics, staging, and orchestra placement, and the theater continues to host an annual festival dedicated exclusively to his operas to this day. His concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk," or "total work of art," argued that opera should fully integrate music, drama, poetry, and visual staging into a single unified artistic experience rather than treating music as merely an accompaniment to a separately conceived drama, a theoretical framework that significantly influenced subsequent opera and even film composition. Wagner's well-documented antisemitic writings and the subsequent adoption of his music by the Nazi regime decades after his death have made him one of the most controversial major figures in classical music history, and his work remains informally but persistently boycotted from performance in Israel, a tension between his musical influence and his personal legacy that continues to shape how his work is discussed and performed.
VS
Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach composed more than 1,000 surviving works across nearly every major genre of his era — cantatas, orchestral suites, keyboard works, and sacred choral music — during a career spent largely working as a church musician in Germany rather than as a celebrated international touring virtuoso during his own lifetime. His mastery of counterpoint, the technique of combining multiple independent melodic lines into a unified harmonic whole, reached its most famous expression in works like The Well-Tempered Clavier and The Art of Fugue, compositions still used today as foundational texts for teaching advanced music theory and composition. Bach's reputation was relatively modest outside professional musical circles during his own lifetime, and it wasn't until composer Felix Mendelssohn's celebrated 1829 revival performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, nearly 80 years after Bach's death, that his broader posthumous reputation as one of history's greatest composers began to solidify. His combined body of sacred and secular work, technical rigor, and continued influence on virtually every subsequent generation of Western composers has made Bach a foundational reference point that composers across radically different later eras and styles have continued to study and draw from.
