Richie McCaw
Richie McCaw made his All Blacks debut in 2001 and went on to become the most capped rugby player in New Zealand history, playing 148 tests across a 15-year international career, 110 of them as team captain — also an all-time record for any national rugby team. McCaw captained the All Blacks to back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles in 2011 and 2015, becoming the first captain in the tournament's history to lift the trophy twice, and New Zealand didn't lose a single match during either World Cup campaign under his leadership. Playing openside flanker, a position built around relentless breakdown work rather than highlight-reel tries, McCaw's influence on games was measured less in a box score than in turnovers won and opposition ball disrupted — a style of dominance that took years for casual fans to fully appreciate but that opposing coaches feared more than almost any other player of his era. McCaw retired in 2015 immediately after the second World Cup win, finishing with an All Blacks win percentage north of 89% across his captaincy tenure, a level of sustained team success that's central to why he's so often named the greatest forward, and by many assessments the greatest player outright, in rugby history.
VS
Martin Johnson
Martin Johnson captained England to the 2003 Rugby World Cup title, the only time an England men's team has won the tournament, anchoring the pack as a lock forward known for a physical, uncompromising style that set the tone for the entire team around him. Johnson is the only player to have captained two separate British & Irish Lions tours, in 1997 to South Africa and 2001 to Australia, winning the series in 1997 — a rare honor reflecting how consistently he was trusted to lead a composite team built from four different national rugby unions. His leadership style was built around physical presence and demanding standards rather than vocal motivation, and teammates across both his England and Lions careers consistently described his mere presence in a lineup as raising the intensity of everyone playing alongside him. Johnson later moved into coaching, taking over as England's team manager from 2008 to 2011, a tenure that didn't replicate his playing success but that reflected how central he'd remained to English rugby even after retiring — a career that, between two World Cup-era captaincies and two Lions tours, is still the standard other England forwards are measured against.
