Risk
Risk was created by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse in 1957, originally released in France as "La Conquête du Monde" (The Conquest of the World), before Parker Brothers acquired the rights and released the game internationally as Risk in 1959. The game's core mechanic, having players attempt to conquer territories across a stylized world map through dice-based combat resolution, established one of the earliest and most influential templates for the territorial-conquest strategy board game genre that numerous subsequent games have built upon. Risk became particularly associated with lengthy multi-hour gameplay sessions given the scale of its full-world-conquest objective, and the game has been released in numerous licensed thematic variations over the decades, including editions based on major entertainment franchises reskinning the core conquest mechanics. Risk's combination of its filmmaker-created origins and its foundational role establishing the territorial-conquest board game genre has made it one of the most historically influential strategy board games ever released.
VS
Monopoly
Monopoly was patented by Charles Darrow in 1935 and sold to Parker Brothers, though the game's actual origins trace back to Elizabeth Magie's 1904 patent for "The Landlord's Game," a board game she specifically designed to illustrate the economic consequences of concentrated land ownership and monopolistic capitalism. Darrow's version, closely based on informal variants of Magie's game that had already been circulating and evolving among players for decades, replaced Magie's original didactic anti-monopoly intent with a straightforward property-acquisition competitive game, and Parker Brothers paid Magie a flat $500 for her original patent rights. Monopoly became one of the best-selling board games in history, with the game licensed into hundreds of localized city and franchise-themed editions worldwide, and its distinctive board spaces, including Boardwalk and Park Place from the original Atlantic City-based design, remain instantly recognizable even to people who have never played. Monopoly's combination of its disputed and often-erased origins in Elizabeth Magie's anti-monopoly design and its subsequent transformation into one of the best-selling board games in history has made it one of the most commercially significant and historically contested games ever created.
