The Ritz-Carlton
The Ritz-Carlton traces its name and inspiration to hotelier César Ritz, whose late-19th and early-20th-century European hotels set enduring standards for luxury hospitality, though the modern American Ritz-Carlton brand was developed separately, taking on his name and reputation for excellence. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company became renowned within the hospitality industry for its "Gold Standards" service philosophy, including its well-known motto "We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen," and the brand became the first hotel company to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, doing so twice. Marriott acquired a majority stake in The Ritz-Carlton in 1995 and later full ownership, incorporating the ultra-luxury brand into its broader portfolio while maintaining Ritz-Carlton's distinct service philosophy and brand identity separately from Marriott's other properties. The Ritz-Carlton's combination of its namesake connection to hospitality pioneer César Ritz and its unprecedented two-time Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award has made it one of the most service-focused luxury hotel brands in the industry.
VS
Hyatt
Hyatt was founded in 1957 when Jay Pritzker purchased the Hyatt House motel near Los Angeles International Airport, and the Pritzker family built the company into a major international hotel chain over subsequent decades while maintaining significant family ownership and control. The company became particularly known for pioneering the modern atrium-style hotel lobby design, introduced at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in 1967, featuring a dramatic multi-story open interior space that became widely copied across the hotel industry and remains closely associated with Hyatt's architectural identity. Hyatt has positioned itself with a somewhat smaller, more selectively curated portfolio of hotel brands compared to larger competitors like Marriott and Hilton, while pursuing significant acquisitions including Two Roads Hospitality and Apple Leisure Group to expand its luxury and all-inclusive resort offerings. Hyatt's combination of its sustained Pritzker family ownership and its pioneering atrium-style hotel architecture has made it one of the most architecturally influential hotel chains in the industry's history.
