Rivian R1T
The Rivian R1T launched in 2021 as the first all-electric pickup truck to reach production from any manufacturer, beating far larger and better-funded rivals — Ford's F-150 Lightning and Tesla's own Cybertruck among them — to market by months, a genuinely significant milestone for a company that had been operating in relative obscurity for over a decade before its 2018 public unveiling. Its quad-motor variant, with one electric motor independently driving each wheel, delivered a genuinely novel off-road capability called "tank turn," letting the truck rotate close to its own footprint by spinning the wheels on each side in opposite directions — a maneuver no gasoline or diesel truck's mechanical drivetrain could physically replicate, and one Rivian marketed specifically to distinguish the R1T from its eventual gasoline and electric competitors alike. The truck's "gear tunnel," a lockable storage compartment running through the body between the cab and the bed, made creative use of space freed up by the absence of a traditional driveshaft and exhaust system, becoming one of the R1T's most distinctive and frequently cited practical features among reviewers and owners. Built at Rivian's plant in Normal, Illinois — a former Mitsubishi Motors factory the company acquired and retooled — the R1T's head start on the electric-pickup category, combined with backing and early investment from Amazon and Ford, made it one of the most closely watched new vehicle launches of the early 2020s and the truck most directly responsible for proving genuine consumer demand existed for a fully electric pickup before any legacy truck manufacturer had one on sale.

General Motors EV1
The General Motors EV1, produced from 1996 to 1999, was the first mass-produced electric vehicle built by a major American automaker in the modern era, developed in direct response to a 1990 California Air Resources Board mandate requiring manufacturers selling cars in the state to offer a percentage of zero-emission vehicles — a regulatory push GM's own engineering team turned into a genuinely purpose-built EV rather than a converted gasoline model. Available only through a closed lease program rather than outright purchase, with GM retaining ownership and control of every unit, the EV1 nonetheless built an unusually devoted following among the roughly 1,100 drivers who leased one, many of whom reported strong loyalty to the car's quiet, quick acceleration and its aerodynamically optimized, purpose-built two-seat body — a shape achieved with one of the lowest drag coefficients of any production car at the time. GM's decision to end the program in 2003, reclaim every leased vehicle, and crush nearly the entire fleet despite public protests and organized efforts by drivers to purchase or preserve their cars became one of the most controversial and closely scrutinized corporate decisions in modern automotive history, chronicled in the widely seen 2006 documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" Assembled in Lansing, Michigan, the EV1's abrupt cancellation is still frequently cited by historians and EV advocates as a case study in a major manufacturer walking away from an electrification bet nearly two decades before Tesla and the rest of the industry made the same technology a mainstream commercial priority — a genuine "what if" that looms over the entire subsequent history of the electric car.
