Rockin' Dopsie
Rockin' Dopsie, born Alton Rubin, became one of zydeco's most internationally recognized ambassadors during the 1980s, performing with his band the Twisters at major international festivals and collaborating with rock musicians including Paul Simon, whose 1986 album "Graceland" featured Dopsie's band. That "Graceland" collaboration introduced zydeco to a massive global pop audience that had likely never previously encountered the genre, giving Dopsie a level of mainstream international visibility that few other traditional zydeco musicians of his era achieved. His energetic live performances, incorporating showmanship elements alongside his accordion playing, made Dopsie one of zydeco's most popular touring acts internationally, helping introduce the genre to European and other international audiences well beyond Louisiana and the broader American South. His combination of his high-profile Paul Simon collaboration and his role as one of zydeco's most internationally touring ambassadors has made Rockin' Dopsie one of the genre's most globally significant figures.
VS
Buckwheat Zydeco
Buckwheat Zydeco, the stage name of accordionist Stanley Dural Jr., became the artist most responsible for bringing zydeco to mainstream national and international audiences following his commercial breakthrough in the 1980s, well beyond the genre's traditional Louisiana Creole base. His background performing in touring rhythm and blues bands before switching to accordion and forming his own zydeco band gave his music a particularly strong soul and funk influence, distinguishing his sound from more traditionally rooted zydeco contemporaries. Buckwheat Zydeco's numerous high-profile collaborations and television appearances, including performing at presidential inaugurations and major American cultural events, gave zydeco a level of mainstream national visibility that few other artists in the genre achieved during the same period. His combination of his mainstream commercial breakthrough and his role bringing zydeco to national audiences well beyond Louisiana has made Buckwheat Zydeco one of the most significant ambassadors in the genre's modern history.
