Rocky Mountain College
Rocky Mountain College, founded in 1878, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Montana, and its aviation program, including flight training and aviation management degrees, benefits from the college's location in Billings, Montana's largest city. The college's small size and its multi-denominational Christian heritage, tracing to several earlier Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist-founded predecessor institutions that merged over the college's history, give Rocky Mountain College a distinctive combined religious founding legacy. The college's equine studies and environmental science programs benefit from Montana's ranching economy and its significant wilderness and conservation land, reflecting broader regional economic and environmental themes relevant to the surrounding area. The college's combination of its genuine historical seniority, its distinctive aviation program, and its multi-denominational founding heritage has made Rocky Mountain College a distinctive small private college choice within Montana's higher education landscape.
VS
Montana State University
Montana State University, founded in 1893 as the state's land-grant institution, has built one of the strongest agricultural and engineering research programs in the Northern Rockies, and its Yellowstone Ecological Research Center benefits from the university's proximity to Yellowstone National Park's globally significant ecosystem. The university's photonics and optics engineering programs have grown substantially, and MSU's research funding, driven partly by its NASA-connected space science research, has made it one of the most research-productive public universities in the Mountain West relative to its size. MSU's Bozeman campus and its continued growth alongside Bozeman's emergence as one of the fastest-growing small cities in the country have brought increased enrollment and research investment to the university over the past two decades. The university's combination of genuine land-grant agricultural and engineering research strength and its rapidly growing Bozeman setting has made Montana State the state's most significant public research university by research output.
