Rollins College
Rollins College, founded in 1885, is Florida's oldest recognized college and has built a reputation as the state's leading small private liberal arts college, with a picturesque Winter Park campus on Lake Virginia that consistently draws praise as one of the most attractive college campuses in the Southeast. The Crummer Graduate School of Business, part of Rollins, has built a strong regional reputation for its MBA program, and the undergraduate college's small class sizes and low student-faculty ratio reflect a deliberate institutional focus on close, discussion-based instruction over large lecture formats. Rollins has consistently ranked at or near the top of US News & World Report's regional university rankings for the South, a category distinct from the national liberal arts college rankings that recognizes the school's particular strength among comprehensive institutions serving that specific region. The college's warm-weather, waterfront campus and its relatively small enrollment of around 2,000 undergraduates have made it a consistent draw for students seeking a small-college experience in a setting quite different from the rural New England campuses that dominate the national liberal arts college rankings.
VS
New College of Florida
New College of Florida, founded in 1960 as a private liberal arts college before becoming part of the state university system in 1975, has long operated as Florida's designated "honors college," admitting a small, academically selective student body onto a public-university tuition structure that's unusually generous relative to the caliber of instruction offered. The college's academic model replaces traditional letter grades with narrative evaluations for most of its history, and students design individualized study plans called "contracts" rather than following a fixed distribution of required courses, a structure that gives New College one of the most unconventional undergraduate curricula among American public colleges. With an enrollment under 700 students, New College maintains an unusually small, intimate campus culture directly on Sarasota Bay, and its small size has historically let it maintain the kind of close faculty mentorship more typical of elite private liberal arts colleges than public universities. The college underwent a highly publicized and contentious leadership and curriculum overhaul beginning in 2023, after a new state-appointed board of trustees moved to reshape its academic and cultural direction — a still-unfolding transition that's made New College one of the most closely watched public liberal arts colleges in the country.
