Rush
Rush, formed in Toronto in 1968, built their sound around exceptional individual musicianship across all three members, and drummer Neil Peart's technically intricate playing and philosophically dense lyrics made him widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history. Their 1976 album 2112, built around a lengthy title-track suite depicting a dystopian future society, reflected the band's willingness to embrace both progressive rock's compositional ambition and Peart's interest in libertarian and science-fiction-influenced philosophical themes within their lyrics. The band's willingness to gradually incorporate synthesizers and more mainstream rock production into their sound during the 1980s, without fully abandoning their progressive rock technical complexity, let Rush maintain relevance across changing musical trends better than some genre peers. Rush's combination of exceptional instrumental musicianship, particularly Peart's drumming, and their sustained multi-decade commercial and critical relevance made them one of the most enduringly respected progressive rock bands, and their eventual 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction reflected broad recognition of their significance despite the genre's historically mixed mainstream critical reception.
VS
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, formed in 1970 by musicians from three previously separate bands, became one of the most commercially successful progressive rock acts of the 1970s, built around keyboardist Keith Emerson's virtuosic, classically trained playing style incorporated directly into rock arrangements. Emerson's elaborate live performances, including using knives to hold down organ keys and physically wrestling with his instrument on stage, made ELP's concerts among the most visually theatrical of the progressive rock era, blending genuine musical virtuosity with genuinely spectacular showmanship. The band's adaptations of classical compositions, including their reworking of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, reflected progressive rock's broader tendency to directly incorporate classical music repertoire into rock arrangements, a technique ELP pursued more directly and extensively than most genre peers. ELP's combination of Emerson's genuinely virtuosic classical-influenced keyboard playing and their massive, elaborately staged live shows made them one of the most commercially successful and technically ambitious progressive rock acts of the genre's 1970s commercial peak.
