Ryoko Tani
Ryoko Tani won Olympic medals across five consecutive Games between 1992 and 2008, including two golds, and her combined seven World Championship titles established her as the most decorated women's judoka in the sport's history at the time of her retirement. Standing just 4-foot-9, Tani compensated for her small stature with exceptional technical speed and precision, and her signature quick, decisive throwing technique made her one of the most tactically admired judokas of her generation regardless of gender. Her sustained excellence across five Olympics, spanning 16 years of elite international competition, reflected remarkable career longevity in a sport that places significant physical demands on competitors, and Tani remained competitive for a medal even in her final Olympic appearance well into her thirties. Tani later became a member of the Japanese parliament, extending her public influence beyond competitive judo into national politics, and her combined Olympic and World Championship record established her as one of the most significant figures in the history of women's judo internationally.
VS
Kayla Harrison
Kayla Harrison became the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in judo, at the 2012 London Games, and she successfully defended her title at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming the first American judoka, male or female, to win back-to-back Olympic golds in the sport. Harrison has spoken openly about surviving sexual abuse by a former coach during her teenage years, and her decision to publicly share that experience, along with her subsequent Olympic success, made her an influential advocate for other survivors of sexual abuse in sports, particularly within the Olympic training system. Her combination of American judo's historically limited international success and her own back-to-back Olympic gold medals made Harrison one of the most significant figures in the sport's relatively brief history of major American success, establishing judo as a genuine gold-medal opportunity for American athletes in a way it hadn't previously been. Harrison later transitioned to mixed martial arts, becoming a champion in professional MMA promotions, extending her combat sports success into an entirely different competitive discipline following her judo retirement, and her combined judo and MMA achievements have made her one of the most accomplished American combat sports athletes across multiple disciplines.
