Saint Michael's College
Saint Michael's College, founded in 1904 by the Society of Saint Edmund, is a Catholic liberal arts college whose small size and Colchester, Vermont campus give it a close-knit religious community distinct from the state's larger public university. The college's education and biology programs have built solid regional reputations, and Saint Michael's continued Catholic mission, including its explicit commitment to social justice-oriented service learning, shapes the curriculum and campus culture throughout a student's four years. The college's proximity to Burlington gives students access to that city's broader cultural and economic opportunities while maintaining a distinct, smaller residential college campus experience separate from the larger University of Vermont just a few miles away. Saint Michael's combination of its Catholic Edmundite mission, its emphasis on service-oriented education, and its proximity to Burlington's broader cultural resources has made it a distinctive choice among Vermont's private colleges, particularly for Catholic students seeking a faith-based liberal arts education.
VS
Middlebury College
Middlebury College, founded in 1800, is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the country, and its foreign language programs are widely regarded as among the very best of any American college, anchored by the Middlebury Language Schools, an intensive immersion summer program requiring students to speak only their target language for the program's entire duration. The college's Bread Loaf School of English and its associated writers' conference, one of the oldest and most prestigious literary conferences in the country, have drawn major American writers to the Vermont campus for summer programming for nearly a century. Middlebury's rural Vermont setting and its ski team's strong competitive tradition, along with the college's proximity to significant skiing terrain, have made winter sports a significant part of campus culture, similar to several other elite New England liberal arts colleges in mountainous settings. The college's combination of genuinely elite liberal arts academics, its nationally leading foreign language immersion programs, and its historic literary conference tradition has made Middlebury one of the most distinctive top liberal arts colleges in the country.
