San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo was founded in 1916, reportedly inspired by founder Harry Wegeforth's chance encounter with leftover exotic animals from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and it grew over the following century into one of the largest and most scientifically significant zoos in the world. The zoo was among the first in the world to move decisively away from iron-barred cages toward open, moated naturalistic habitats, and its research arm, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, operates a genuinely significant conservation and breeding program working to prevent extinction for numerous critically endangered species. The zoo played a pioneering role in giant panda conservation in the United States, hosting a long-running panda breeding program through a partnership with China that made it one of the first American zoos to successfully breed pandas in captivity, a program that drew national media attention for decades. For a San Diego attractions list, the San Diego Zoo is the essential "the zoo that pioneered the modern zoo" entry — an institution founded from a chance encounter in 1916 that's grown into one of the most scientifically significant conservation organizations of any zoo in the world.
VS
Gaslamp Quarter
The Gaslamp Quarter preserves 16 and a half blocks of downtown San Diego's original late-19th-century commercial core, and the district takes its name from the gas-powered street lamps that once lit the neighborhood, several of which have been restored or recreated to preserve the area's historic character. The neighborhood fell into serious decline through much of the mid-20th century, becoming a red-light and skid-row district before a dedicated preservation and redevelopment effort beginning in the 1980s restored its Victorian-era commercial buildings and transformed the area into one of the city's most active nightlife and dining districts. The district sits directly adjacent to Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, and its restored Victorian storefronts now house restaurants, bars, and nightclubs that draw a significant share of downtown San Diego's evening foot traffic, particularly on game nights and weekends. For a San Diego attractions list, the Gaslamp Quarter is the essential "Victorian San Diego, restored and reopened for the night" entry — a once-declining historic commercial district saved by 1980s preservation efforts, now one of the city's most active nightlife destinations.
