Scott Jurek
Scott Jurek won the grueling Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005, a run of sustained dominance in one of ultrarunning's oldest and most prestigious races that remains unmatched in the event's history. His subsequent 2015 supported speed record for completing the entire 2,189-mile Appalachian Trail, finishing in just over 46 days, demonstrated a rare combination of ultra-distance racing speed and multi-week sustained endurance across a genuinely different competitive format than his trail-race career had been built on. Jurek's plant-based diet, unusual among elite endurance athletes at the time of his early career peak, and his subsequent bestselling memoir "Eat and Run" helped raise ultrarunning's broader public visibility well beyond its traditionally small, dedicated community of participants. His combination of his record seven-peat at Western States and his subsequent Appalachian Trail speed record has made Jurek widely regarded as the most publicly influential ultrarunner in the sport's modern history.
VS
Ann Trason
Ann Trason won the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run a record 14 times between 1989 and 2003, establishing a level of sustained dominance at ultrarunning's most historically significant race that remained the sport's benchmark for consistency for decades afterward. Her numerous world records across multiple ultra distances during the 1990s, at a time when women's participation in ultrarunning was still comparatively rare, helped establish the sport's competitive legitimacy for women and inspired a generation of subsequent female ultrarunners. Trason's 1995 overall victory, beating the entire men's field outright at a 100km race, became one of the earliest and most significant examples of a female ultrarunner outperforming the top men's competitors directly, a result that predated similar breakthrough performances by decades. Her combination of her record 14 Western States victories and her pioneering role establishing women's ultrarunning legitimacy has made Trason widely regarded as one of the most foundational figures in the sport's history.
