Seattle Great Wheel
The Seattle Great Wheel opened in 2012 at the end of Pier 57 on the city's central waterfront, built as a permanent Ferris wheel specifically to give Seattle a signature waterfront attraction comparable to similar observation wheels that had already opened in cities like London and Singapore. Standing 175 feet tall, it was among the tallest Ferris wheels on the West Coast at the time of its construction, and its fully enclosed gondolas — a design choice specifically suited to Seattle's frequently rainy and windy weather — let it operate reliably year-round rather than being limited to fair-weather seasons. The wheel's position at the end of the pier extends it roughly 40 feet out over Elliott Bay itself, giving riders a genuinely unobstructed view combining the downtown skyline, the waterfront, and the water below in a single rotation, a vantage point unavailable from any other single attraction in the city. For a Seattle attractions list, the Great Wheel is the essential "the waterfront's newest icon" entry — a 2012 addition built specifically to give Seattle the kind of signature waterfront Ferris wheel other major coastal cities already had, extended out over Elliott Bay itself for an unobstructed view.
VS
Museum of Pop Culture
The Museum of Pop Culture, originally opened in 2000 as the Experience Music Project, was funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and built specifically to house his extensive personal collection of Jimi Hendrix memorabilia, reflecting both Allen's personal fandom and Hendrix's own roots as a Seattle native. The museum's building, designed by architect Frank Gehry, features a deliberately unconventional, fragmented metallic exterior meant to evoke the shape of a smashed electric guitar, making it one of the most architecturally distinctive structures in the entire city regardless of what's showing inside. The museum's focus expanded well beyond music over the following decades to include science fiction, horror, and broader popular culture exhibits, a shift reflected in its 2016 rebrand to the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), now housing everything from Hendrix's guitars to costumes and props from major film and television franchises. For a Seattle attractions list, MoPOP is the essential "Frank Gehry built a guitar-shaped tribute to Jimi Hendrix" entry — a Paul Allen-funded museum that's grown from one Seattle native's rock legacy into a broader home for popular culture artifacts of every kind.
