Serral
Joona "Serral" Sotala became the first non-Korean player to win a major global StarCraft II championship, claiming the 2018 WCS Global Finals title in a game whose competitive scene had been almost entirely dominated by South Korean players since the genre's inception. His technical mastery of the game's demanding mechanical and strategic requirements, achieved as a Finnish player training largely outside South Korea's deeply developed competitive infrastructure, made Serral's breakthrough particularly significant given the historical gap between Korean and international StarCraft II competition. Serral's sustained dominance following his initial breakthrough, continuing to win multiple subsequent major championships against South Korea's traditionally dominant player pool, established him as the defining non-Korean competitor in the game's history rather than a single-tournament anomaly. His combination of breaking South Korea's historical stranglehold on top-level StarCraft II competition and his sustained subsequent championship success has made Serral one of the most historically significant players in real-time strategy esports, fundamentally reshaping assumptions about where the game's top competitive talent could emerge from.
VS
N0tail
Johan "N0tail" Sundstein won The International, Dota 2's premier annual championship tournament, twice as team captain of OG, and his back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019 made his team the first in the tournament's history to win consecutive championships. His 2019 championship victory earned OG a prize pool share exceeding $15 million, reflecting Dota 2's crowdfunded prize pool model that had grown The International into one of the largest total prize pools in all of professional sports by that point, esports or otherwise. N0tail's leadership and strategic decision-making as team captain, including his willingness to make significant roster changes even shortly before major tournaments, reflected a management approach that proved unusually successful in building sustained championship-level team chemistry. His combination of back-to-back championships at the sport's most prestigious and highest-paying tournament, along with his significant role in OG's broader institutional success as an organization, has made N0tail one of the most statistically and financially significant competitors in Dota 2's history.
