Serta
Serta was founded in 1931 during the Great Depression as a cooperative of independent mattress manufacturers, later becoming one of the largest mattress companies in the United States and one of the most recognized names in the innerspring mattress category. The company's "Serta Counting Sheep" advertising mascots, a group of sleepy cartoon sheep introduced in a long-running early-2000s advertising campaign, became one of the most widely recognized mattress advertising icons, appearing in numerous commercials and building strong brand recognition tied specifically to sleep and comfort. Serta's 2012 corporate combination with rival Simmons Bedding Company under the same parent company created one of the largest bedding manufacturers in North America, consolidating two historically separate legacy mattress brands under shared corporate ownership while maintaining distinct retail branding. Serta's combination of its Depression-era manufacturer-cooperative origins and its widely recognized Counting Sheep advertising mascots has made it one of the most commercially significant traditional mattress brands in the country.
VS
Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic was founded in Denmark in the 1990s, built around a viscoelastic memory foam material originally developed by NASA in the 1960s to help cushion astronauts during the extreme pressures of spacecraft launches, a material NASA never commercialized itself. The company became the primary popularizer of memory foam mattresses for mainstream consumer use, helping introduce a genuinely different mattress technology and feel compared to the traditional innerspring coil mattresses that had dominated the American market for decades. Tempur-Pedic's premium pricing and its extensive infomercial and direct-response marketing throughout the 2000s helped establish memory foam as a recognized premium mattress category, and the company later merged with rival Sealy in 2012 to form Tempur Sealy International, one of the largest bedding companies in the world. Tempur-Pedic's combination of its NASA-originated memory foam material and its role popularizing memory foam as a mainstream mattress category has made it one of the most technologically significant mattress brands in the industry's history.
