Shepherd University
Shepherd University, founded in 1871, is located in the historic town of Shepherdstown, West Virginia's oldest town, and the university's proximity to Washington, DC, roughly 70 miles away, gives students in its business, environmental studies, and political science programs unusually direct access to internships in the federal government and policy sector. The university's environmental studies program benefits from Shepherdstown's location along the Potomac River and its proximity to significant Chesapeake Bay watershed conservation research, and Shepherd's contemporary music program has built a solid regional reputation. Shepherd's historic campus, integrated into Shepherdstown's well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century downtown, gives the university a distinctive small-town historic setting relative to West Virginia's larger public institutions. The university's combination of its historic small-town setting, its proximity-driven access to Washington, DC internship opportunities, and its environmental studies strength tied to the Potomac watershed has made Shepherd a distinctive choice among West Virginia's public universities.
VS
Marshall University
Marshall University, founded in 1837, is West Virginia's second-largest public university, and the school's 1970 football team plane crash, which killed 75 people including nearly the entire team, coaching staff, and numerous boosters, remains one of the most devastating tragedies in American college sports history. The university's subsequent rebuilding of its football program following that tragedy, dramatized in the 2006 film We Are Marshall, became a defining part of the university's institutional identity, and the program's recovery is still cited as one of the most significant comeback stories in college athletics. Marshall's forensic science and medical programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's Huntington, West Virginia campus serves as a significant educational and healthcare hub for the state's southwestern region. The university's combination of its historically significant and painful football tragedy, its subsequent recovery, and its role as a major regional public university has made Marshall one of the most institutionally distinctive universities in West Virginia's higher education system.
